Providing Outstanding Consultancy on a Level Crossing Removal Project

How can we gain an in-depth understanding of the roles we’re required to fill and best match our candidates’ skills to different tasks?

Our client is an international company that operates in a network of 50 locations, delivering expertise in post-tensioning systems and construction techniques for civil engineering structures and buildings. Our Civil, Construction and Rail team partnered with our client on The Caulfield to Dandenong Level Crossing Removal Project. The aim was to remove 9 level crossings by using elevated rail design.

THE CHALLENGE:

We needed to provide 190 ongoing casual staff to remove the current railway tracks and 9 level crossings from Caulfield through to Dandenong, while simultaneously finding 200 ongoing casual staff to build the 2,226 concrete pre-cast segments for the elevated rail at a facility in Pakenham. We interviewed, screened, and completed pre-employment checks for more than 600 employees to get the core group of people we needed who had the right skill sets.

It’s rare that a client engages only one supplier for a project of this size, but they understood what we did and there was a great synergy between Zoom Recruitment's Civil, Construction and Rail staff and our client's procurement team.

NEXT LEVEL CONSULTANCY:

For this project, providing consultancy meant becoming part of our client’s on-site team for more than a year and being involved in every level of the planning from the very beginning. Working on-site every day allowed us to be included in the actual processes and provided detailed insider knowledge from our client, allowing us to gain an in-depth insight into the daily operations management of the project. For our client, production and time frames severely impacted the number of staff they required. Our team got to experience just how crucial the time aspect was on-site and really understand our client’s internal pressures. In this way, we were able to offer the right solutions for our client depending on the situation on-site at the time.

"An important part of working in the Civil, Construction and Rail industry is being able to build solid relationships with our clients. It was very different being on-site and building those relationships because in many instances, people became workmates and friends instead of only being our clients."

Working on-site also allowed a high-level of care for the members of our external workforce. Assisting our clients and project team was simpler because our staff didn’t have to pick up the phone to call when they had a query – they just spoke to our Zoom Recruitment team on-site. It was handy being there and great being able to give anyone assistance when they needed it.

Another benefit of being on-site each day was being able to understand the roles very intricately. Having detailed knowledge of roles like production workers, carpenters, steel fixers, tradespeople, trades assistants and concreters allowed us to anticipate our client’s needs – we knew when and why they needed what they needed. We also understood how we could match our candidates’ skills to the roles that needed to be filled. The result was that we could supply the staff that they needed in a quicker time frame and meet their needs early.

After 18 months on the job, our team saw the completion of this pivotal project that would alleviate some of Melbourne’s bumper-to-bumper traffic and make travelling on this route both quicker and safer. A total of 190 of our people worked to remove 9 level crossings on the Caulfield to Dandenong route. Another 200 of our people helped to build the 2,226 pre-cast concrete segments for the elevated rail that would carry Metro passenger trains and freight trains.

Just another project where we helped to Make, Move and Mould Australia.
