What We’ve Learned About Remote Work

What We’ve Learned About Remote Work-1

Up until this year, working from home wasn’t something you would have caught many businesses going out of their way to make possible for their employees. It was thought that remote work posed a risk to the productivity of a business. That it simply wasn’t a viable way of getting the job done.

But this year has turned all of that on its head. Businesses of all kinds have found themselves relying upon the efforts of a remote workforce like never before. And the good news is that remote work has passed the field test with flying colours. After all, it had to.

In this article, we want to take a look at some of the things we’ve learnt throughout this period of remote work. Read on here to find out what we’ve been noticing at Zoom Recruitment.

Culture is everything

At Zoom, we’ve always stressed the importance of maintaining a strong workplace culture. It’s what binds a team together and ensures that each member of that team has the support they need to go that extra mile. It’s not an easy thing to do, but the benefits of knowing you can rely on the people and dynamics of your business means you can do great work.

This period has seen the culture of every workplace put to the test. Sacrifices, new and unfamiliar communication methods, the ramped-up pressure to get the job done. All of it has reaffirmed our belief that it’s culture (and some strong coordination efforts) that keep the wheels turning.

Communication is key

Lockdowns, remote work, and uncertainty have played havoc on the attitudes and headspaces of workers across Australia. There have certainly been positives, but the adjustment to remote work has not been a comfortable one for most.

Video conferences have become the new norm, and instant messaging has had to take the place of getting up and checking in with a coworker. But if anything, this period has helped workers across the board re-learn the value of good communication.

The importance of self-reliance

Working remotely simply isn’t the same thing as being in the office. There isn’t always someone there to turn to for advice when something crops up, and there certainly aren’t the same sorts of incidental opportunities to solicit insight from a co-worker. What this period has done, particularly for those early in their careers or new to their roles, is push so many workers to work on their ability to rely on themselves to find an answer.

Workers take well to working from home

There’s one big thing that we’ve always suspected about office work. It’s that most workers would take well to working from home at least some portion of the time. We can’t tell how excited we are to see that it seems to be the case.

Productivity has stayed up, and in some cases even gone up further. And what we see now is an opportunity for forward thinking businesses to ask themselves how they’re going to take what we’re seeing right now and use it to provide more flexible arrangements for their workforce even after all this is said and done.

Stay in the loop with Zoom

This year has been a rollercoaster so far, and we’re all hoping for a sharp return to normalcy. But we can’t deny that we’ve learned a lot. Keep coming back to see what else we have to say about work and recruitment, and don’t hesitate to get in touch if you have any questions or queries.
